Long haul flights are not my favorite thing and I have to admit that I wasn’t really looking forward to this long flight. And then it turns out to be one of my best ones.
I have flown long haul flights in business class only 3-4 times before, always with Lufthansa. Normally I’m sitting in economy class and suffer from the small space and difficulties to sleep. Through the years I have learned to get at least 6 hours sleep. Not 6 hours of good sleep, but at least some kind of rest.
This time I flew the long haul with Air New Zealand and what a positive surprise that was. All the seats in business class could be transferred into something that looked very much like a narrow bed. Each place had walls to the passengers sitting in front of and behind you, so you got some privacy. You didn’t have anyone next to you, so it was easy to get up and down to the toilet. The flight attendants were really nice and one of them even made my bed while I was at the toilet, even though I assured her that I could do it myself. The food and wine selection were great. The only thing I could “complain” about was the movie selection, but it was still quite ok.
When I arrived in Auckland I realized I had nearly 5 hours to spend before my flight to Fiji, so I went to the lounge. The airport is really nice and the lounge is one of the best ones I have visited. They also offered really nice showers and a good breakfast, but since I was quite full from the flight breakfast I just enjoyed a long shower, a cup of espresso and some juice. :-) That felt amazing!
So as a summary – I had a really, really nice flight and arrival this time – even if it was a long haul. If I could afford I would always travel in business class, but since that is not the case I might just enjoy it as much as possible when I fortunate enough to be able to do it.
