The delay was not that big, around 40 minutes, but that was enough for the very slow Newark airport. I ended up standing in the immigration line for nearly one hour and when I finally came through my flight had already left. I asked the staff if there was any chance of going faster through immigration, but NO I had to stay in line with all the other hundreds of people. It took me some time to find my luggage and get to the Lufthansa Service Center. Finally there I was prepared for the worst message. My biggest fear was that they couldn’t find me any flights in the next 2 days, because then I would miss my Costa Rica tour. Luckily I got a flight tomorrow morning at 7.25 (very early morning for me, need to be at airport at 5.25). It pays off to be an experienced Project Manager and plan with some slack. J Now I will still arrive in time to start my Costa Rica tour.
I had to call my travel agency and let them know that I was delayed, since I had both an airport pick-up and a hotel room waiting for me. My problem was that the phone number that I got was not including country and local code. Luckily my dear friend Maria used to live in Costa Rica. I knew it was late in Sweden, but I sent her a text and asked how to call Costa Rica. She was awake and gave the info I needed. Thanks Maria! You saved me there! I called my contact José and of course he didn’t speak any English. It becomes a bit funny to talk on the phone in English with someone that doesn’t understand you. In the end I think he understood what I meant and I also sent the information on a text and got the answer “OK, perfect”, so I’m hoping he will be waiting for me tomorrow.
This is the thing – when you travel alone you have to be prepared for everything. Also it helps to have good friends that can help you out. Luckily I have that. J Thanks!
